More great local television screening – this week the highly anticipated Fremantle Media series WENTWORTH starts on Foxtel. A re-imagining of the classic series PRISONER, it premieres 8.30pm Wednesday 1 May on SoHo.

We all know Bea Smith ruled Wentworth Detention Centre with an iron fist. She was gutsy and fearless, with an acid tongue and an enviable wit. For Bea, violence was a necessary evil. She was intimidating and tough, but fair. Always on the side of the underdog.

But who was Bea Smith before prison? How did a wife and a mother from the suburbs become top dog without rival? Where did the confidence and fortitude come from that enable her to get there, and what injustices and misadventures fuelled her determination to do it?
