STRONG VICTORIAN COHORT AMONG RECIPIENTS OF SCREEN AUSTRALIA’S GENDER MATTERS FUNDING

Congratulations to the Victorian recipients of Screen Australia's Gender Matters: Brilliant Stories and Brilliant Careers funding, announced on 12 July.

Selected from over 450 applications, a total of 22 Victorian concepts or projects helmed by women or involving female practitioners in lead creative roles, will share in more than $3 million in funding.

Under the Brilliant Stories initiative, ten television concepts from Victoria will receive funding to fast-track the development of their concepts, including:

  • The Elementals, Director Sian Davies
  • Fallout, Film Art Media
  • Fearless, Werner Film Productions
  • The Gifted, Princess Pictures
  • Holy Cow, See Pictures, Bliss Bomb, Jungle FTV, Director Daina Reid
  • I Am Woman, Ruby Entertainment, Director Daina Reid, Writer Alicia Gwinner
  • Overflow, Writer Elise McCredie
  • Silver Lining, Carver Films, Producers Anna McLeish, Sarah Shaw
  • Sixteen, Madman Production Company, Director Amy Gebhart, Writer Veronica Gleeson
  • Tales from Outer Suburbia, Highly Spirited, Producer Sophie Byrne, Executive Producer Julia Adams, Director Shaun Tan, Writer Lally Katz

Funding was awarded to four online projects from Victoria:

  • Caravan of Love, Producers Trudy Hellier, Maria Theodorakis, Executive Producers Susie Dee, Nicci Wilks, Writers Patricia Cornelius, Melissa Reeves
  • Funny Rabbit, Writer/Director/Producer Biddy O’Loughlin
  • Good Grief, Producer Amanda Reedy, Executive Producer Nicole Minchin, Director Amanda Jane, Writers Natalie Harris, Jess Harris
  • Sunshine, RKPix

Seven Victorian feature films to be funded include:

  • Arrivals, Director Corrie Chen, Writers Penelope Chai and Corrie Chen
  • A Terrible Beauty, Storey Kids, Producers Anna Kojevnikov, Sally Storey, Writer/Director Sarah-Jane Woulahan
  • Big Girl, Rogue Productions, Producer Glenda Hambly, Writer/Director Melanie Scammell
  • Flower, Aquarius Films, Producers Angie Fielder, Cecilia Ritchie and Polly Staniford, Director Del Kathryn Barton, Writer Emma Jensen
  • Reincarnation, Carver Films, Producers Anna McLeish, Sarah Shaw, Writer Hannah Kent
  • Relic, Carver Films, Producers Anna McLeish, Sarah Shaw, Writer/ Director Natalie James
  • Ride Like a Girl, The Film Company, Director Rachel Griffiths, Writer Elise McCredie

Through Brilliant Careers the Natalie Miller Fellowship will roll out a national program to focus on career advancement and leadership as well as formal mentorships with established screen industry professionals.

Brilliant Stories and Brilliant Careers are part of Screen Australia’s broader $5 million Gender Matters program, announced in 2015 as a response to the identified gender imbalance in lead creative roles across the screen sector.
