2018 Melbourne International Film Festival closes on a high note

  29 Aug 2018

Film Victoria supported projects, I Used to be Normal: a Boyband Fangirl Story, Jessica Leski's joyous celebration of teenage fandom and pop music, and the uplifting MIFF Premiere Fund-supported The Coming Back Out Ball Movie were recognised in the 2018 Audience Awards, scoring second and third place respectively in the Top 10 Feature Documentaries.

This year’s MIFF ended on a joyful note with Closing Night Gala The Coming Back Out Ball Movie – a heart-warming documentary following the stories of Melbourne’s LGBTQI elders, recognising their struggles and celebrating their lives against the backdrop of the same-sex plebiscite.

Ahead of the Gala screening Film Victoria organised a special pre-screening event to celebrate the success of the film with members of the cast and crew. In her opening speech, Film Victoria’s CEO Caroline Pitcher said: “I’m proud to represent an agency that has supported The Coming Back Out Ball Movie through development and production. And I’m privileged tonight to host an event to congratulate the filmmakers and honour the cast, to connect with their stories and affirm Film Victoria’s commitment to support LGBTQIA+ stories and talent, to help foster positive change and stamp out bias”.
