Ride Like a Girl

The inspirational Michelle Payne biopic is set to gallop into cinemas

Rachel Griffiths takes the reins in her feature directorial debut, the highly anticipated biopic Ride Like a Girl, coming to screens on 26 September.

The feel-good feature follows the inspirational true story of Michelle Payne, who beat catastrophic injury, a male-dominated industry, impossible odds of 100 to one and her own inner demons to become the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.

Ride Like a Girl stars Teresa Palmer as Michelle, alongside Sam Neill as Paddy, the patriarch of the Payne racing family, with Michelle’s loyal brother Stevie playing himself (and stealing the screen). They are supported by a strong Victorian cast including Magda Szubanski, Sullivan Stapleton and Mick Molloy.

A quintessentially Victorian story, Ride Like a Girl was crafted by a team of talented Victorian key creatives and crew, with award-winning writers Andrew Knight and Elise McCredie penning the script, costume design by Cappi Ireland and a soundtrack composed by David Hirschfelder. Acclaimed editor Jill Bilcock and the Melbourne-based team from Soundfirm provided their expertise during post-production.

Film Victoria was pleased to support this female-driven project; an inspiring story about a determined and driven woman with a female director at the helm.

Production on Ride Like a Girl commenced in April 2018 and over a nine week shoot injected around $13 million into the Victorian economy and provided skilled screen jobs to more than 500 Victorians.

The film showcases stunning Victorian locations, with production taking place around Melbourne and regional Victoria. Look out for Ballarat, Sunbury, Macedon Ranges, Jan Juc and the Moonee Valley, Hanging Rock and Flemington racecourses, and more on screen.

Ride Like a Girl was supported through Film Victoria’s Assigned Production Investment funding. Our next round of funding for TV and Online projects closes 7 October.

Ride Like a Girl is in cinemas nationally from 26 September.
